Most people visiting La Jolla head straight for the ocean views, but if you go just 4 blocks east, you’ll find Harry’s Coffee Shop, a neighborhood staple serving classic diner fare since 1960.

The atmosphere here tells you everything you need to know, and I do mean that in the best way possible. Because a true vintage diner comes with a few non-negotiables. A proper counter is essential, of course, bottomless coffee refills poured into those heavy, thick ceramic mugs (you know the ones), and a glass display of fresh pies or pastries. These are the details I look for first and Harry’s checks all the boxes. The service is fantastic, too. Even during the peak morning rush, my coffee cup was never empty.

As for the menu, I kept it strictly classic. If a diner can’t pull off eggs, bacon, and crispy hash browns, what am I even doing there? The Superfecta comes with two eggs, two strips of bacon, hash browns, coffee, and a stack of three pancakes (which I shared). At first glance this seems like a lot of food but by the end of the meal the plates were clean.

Once you’re inside, you won’t even miss the ocean views. And if you still need a sea lion fix after all those pancakes, the water is just a short walk away.
