All Hail the Waffle King: The Waffle Spot, San Diego

Travel more. It's on the to-do list every year and while that isn't always financially possible, there are local spots worth highlighting here in San Diego. So this year I'm making a conscious effort to explore not only my favorites but hopefully uncover new ones too. That being said....

Hear ye, hear ye!

Let me introduce you to THE WAFFLE SPOT.

This gem of a diner has reigned over Mission Valley since 1996, and it's probably the most underrated breakfast spot in San Diego proper. It's located on Hotel Circle inside the Kings Inn, a mid-century modern motel that's been here since 1959. Weekends always bring a wait, hotel guests mixed with locals who know what's up, yet somehow it's still not talked about nearly enough.

The appeal is instant: true greasy spoon with kitsch levels off the charts, easily landing it on my list of top diners to grab breakfast. The walls are painted with scenes from a breakfast kingdom ruled by Sir Wafflelot, alongside Sir Robin of Flapjack and the Court Eggster. (Yes, those are their actual names.) Coloring sheets encourage everyone to put their own spin on the Waffle King. Batman, the Joker, South Park characters, if you can think of it, it's probably already hanging on the wall.

Goes without saying but the waffles are fantastic.

Here's the order: stick with the Eggs-citing Classics—two eggs (any style), hash browns, sausage patty. And this is the important part: this kitschy breakfast kingdom serves perfect mini waffles, so it's important you get some. There's something about the minis that are just cooked to perfection.

And there you have it. My first recommendation of the year. So the next time you’re in America’s Finest City, get breakfast with the King. It won't disappoint.
