Here in Southern California, the beaches get most of the press, but there’s a lot of rest and recreation to be had in our mountain towns too! Not far from the cities of San Diego and Los Angeles sits Big Bear, an all-year-round destination that offers something for everyone regardless of the season. Whether you’re a California resident or just visiting, you don’t want to miss this scenic trip to the mountains.
BUT FIRST...
WOULD YOU LIKE FRIES WITH THAT? - THE ORIGINAL MCDONALDS MUSEUM
Before you commit to the windy trail to Big Bear, make a detour to the site of the original McDonalds. The building where it all went down is long gone but in its place stands a museum overflowing with memorabilia.
There is a lot to digest in this small building so give yourself some time to consume it all. The nostalgia will hit you like 4,167 Big Macs. (a ton of bricks)
It’s also home to the world's most detailed mural.

Alright, we've made it! Now what?
EAT
I EAT (at) TEDDY BEARS FOR BREAKFAST - THE TEDDY BEAR RESTAURANT
The Teddy Bear Restaurant has been specializing in homestyle cooking since 1944 so you know it's a legit staple up here for locals and tourists alike. Plus, their slogan is cute as hell. I definitely recommend starting your day with a nice breakfast and then returning later for a slice of homemade pie!

TROPICALI
The Tropicali is a not-so-secret Hawaiin gem in the mountains of Big Bear and IT. IS. AWESOME! I have nothing but great things to say about this place - the ambiance, the food, and the service are all spectacular. Make this a must-do when you're visiting.
Seriously, this place rocks - I can't wait to return.

SLEEP
RENT A CABIN!
I'm definitely a hotel/motel kind of girl but when it comes to the woods you want the full experience and renting a cabin is the way to go up here.
It definitely feels like an escape out here - treat it as such.
We splurged on a hot tub because mountain hot tubbin' is pretty hard to beat. Couldn't wait to jump in!
ACTIVITIES
TAKE A HIKE!
If you follow me you know I don't hike (knee probs) but there are lots of pretty views on this mountain with lots of trails to explore.
We hit one of the "easier" trails but this hike does have some uneven paths in spots, so if your knees are crap like mine, proceed with caution. Overall, it was a beautiful walk rewarded with some views of the lake.
Bear Lake Woodland Trail
Boulder Bay Park
Boulder Bay Park is a nice spot to sit and sip a cup of coffee. Plus, if you're into welcome signs this is where you can get your snaps with Louie the Bear. Canoeing and kayaking the lake are also encouraged.

RIDE A COASTER - MINE SHAFT
Enjoy the views of Big Bear from a cart on a metal track. (Don't worry, it's safe) The mine shaft is California's first and only mountain coaster! The ride is over a mile long and takes approximately 8 minutes to complete, depending on speed. Speaking of speed, each cart is equipped with handbrakes so you have full control of the pace of your ride.
It's a unique experience that you should definitely try once.

A long weekend in Big Bear, CA is more than enough time to hit that reset button but as you sit in that SOCAL traffic at the bottom of the mountain you'll be finding yourself planning a way to already make it back.
